Do It Yourself: Friendship Bracelet

Have a look at this step by step tutorial on the friendship bracelet. If you used to whip up friendship bracelets in grade school and have since forgotten how consider this a refresher course.

You will need colored thread, a pin and some patience.

1. Start by cutting several strands of embroidery thread. Make sure there are two sets of each color. Combine the threads and tie a knot. Pin it to a pillow or to your pants. Separate the two sets, arranging the strands in a mirror-image pattern with the outside strands the same color and so on moving inwards.

2. Start on the left side with the outermost color and make a forward knot by creating a 4-shape over the 2nd color, loop it under and back through the opening.

3. Now pick up the outermost color on the right side and make a backward knot, creating a reverse 4-shape over the 2nd color, loop it under and back through the opening. Pull up and to the left to tighten. Don’t forget to knot twice over each color!

4. Continue knotting towards the left until the outermost strand reaches the middle. Tie a backwards knot with the two middle strands to connect the two halves. Did you remember to knot twice? The first chevron row is complete! Continue with the the next color, which is now the outermost strand . . .

Remembering the color order is important for the first few rows but after the 3rd or 4th row, the strands will fall nicely in place. Finish it with a knot and a braid.

For a striped bracelet, cut one set of colors and simply carry the outermost color all the way through to the right side.

Sun kissed skin

There’s nothing more beautiful than the sun kissed skin. A healthy glow of a natural tan. But with increasing awareness to factors such as skin cancer and sun rays inducing wrinkles we need to be really careful with sun tanning. Here are a few tips for a healthy sun tan this summer. How to get it safely and keep it for longer.

First of all you need to prepare you skin for sun tanning. A gentle scrubbing with a sponge and exfoliating body scrub before applying sunscreen will make a tan last longer and keep it even.

You must never forget about your sunscreen. The one with an SPF of 15-30 will protect skin from dangerous rays and allow the tan to build gradually preventing sunburns or a reddish tan. Make sure to cover all exposed parts of skin evenly to avoid an uneven tan – don’t forget the backs of elbows and knees. And apply it after every now and then, once every two hours and always taking a bath.

Take Your Time

A healthy and natural tan takes time to develop. Spending one to two hours a day tanning is enough for most people, and will let the tan build on itself. Avoid sun exposure during peak hours (from 11am to 3pm).

An All Over Tan

If you are going for an all over tan, make sure to expose all parts of the body to the sun equally. Don’t forget about inner arms tan and the backs of your knees.

After Tanning

Keep the skin hydrated! Use moisturizer or moisturizing oil. A brief shower after a sun tanning session will help get rid of all the sunscreen and re-hydrate the skin. Dry skin is unhealthy and may peel or not maintain the tan very well. Gently rubbing a washcloth is usually enough to remove the sunscreen and prevent the tan from peeling. Immediately after the shower apply a good moisturizer to keep the skin hydrated and supple.

How to make it last longer

Keep your skin healthy and nourished through proper nutrition and hydration is the easiest way to maintain your tan.

Eat more of these foods

Most of the green, orange, and red vegetables and fruits. They contain carotenoids such as carotene, lycopene, lutei, that are strong antioxidants and will protect your skin from dangerous sun rays and help it get desired glow. Next time throw some watermelon, melon, apricots, peaches, carrots, tomatoes, spinach, eggs, fish and olive oil into your meal. You will see the difference!
