Underwater filmmaker Mike deGruy has spent decades looking intimately at the ocean. A consummate storyteller, he takes the stage at Mission Blue to share his awe and excitement — and his fears — about the blue heart of our planet. A truely inspiring talk by TED.

On Friday, February 3rd, at approximately 4pm, Mike and his good friend, Andrew Wight, were killed in a helicopter crash while working on a production together in Australia. Details about the crash are incomplete at this point, but news reports suggest some kind of malfunction in the helicopter at take-off.

A short clip presenting Bethany Hamilton who after surviving a shark attack in which she lost her left arm managed to return to professional surfing. She wrote about her experience in the autobiography Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board. The book later was turned into a film. Filmmaker Jo Tyrell has just released a new surf documentary, “Watching Water”.

Filmed in Southern California and on the North Shore of Oahu, “Watching Water” sets out to explore the visceral essence of surfing. The sounds, the solitude, the friendships formed, the experience of being in the ocean and living ultimately by its rules.

From that first turn, to the first win. The local break and being far from home. The changes, the moments – and the courage to face them. Being with friends – and losing them. This is a story, about what it means, to be out there.

” I came to California with a small idea and a borrowed camera that I’d never used. I didn’t know anyone, or what to ask. From a series of small coincidental events and people believing in the idea I began to create a film. I had grown up wanting to know what they did out there, I’d see them sitting for hours in car parks or on beaches staring out to sea. What were they looking at, what could they see out there that I couldn’t? What made them keep going back?

Couple of days ago we showed you a short teaser to the surf trip that Billabong girls made to Maldives. Today we are presenting the full movie. Do you have time for a 17 minutes trip do Maldives?

3 Killas y Un Kiwi is the first video of its kind, an introduction of Latin American female surfing to the world. Surfing world champion Sofia Mulanovich from Peru, Simone Zea from Venezuela, and Ornella Pellizzari from Argentina lead an army of shredders that carve their way through waves and life.

Even though Sofia Mulanovich paved the way for Latin American girls, it is still a tough road to follow. Since most of the talent goes unnoticed we decided it was time to share their skills with the rest of the world. Latin America is not the only place were female surfing has not received the international recognition it deserves.

Paige Hareb from New Zealand is one of the few women who surfs in her country, therefore we decided to add a little sweet and tasty flavor to our mix and invite a Kiwi to participate in this adventure. With their strength, talent and beauty these women will be a great inspiration to any young girl watching.

Shot on great locations such as Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru, Panama, Puerto Rico, California and Hawaii the diversity of images is a gift to the eye.
